The U.S. passport is an internationally recognized travel document that identifies the bearer as a U.S. citizen or national.

On January 23, 2007, a U.S. passport is required by U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

As of January 31, 2008, if you are traveling by Land or Sea, you must have a birth certificate and proper ID, or Naturalization Cert., or Passport, or NEXUS Card, or if you are a permanent resident a Green Card.

At a later date, the department will implement full requirements for U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries).  You may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

Applications are accepted in our office when accompanied by acceptable documentation.

You will need to fill out an application. You can print the application off of the Internet under www.travel.state.gov and fill it out prior to coming to the License Bureau.

Two passport pictures are required. We can take your photo and print them for you in our office for $10.00.

A certified birth certificate issued from your county or state of birth is required. If you were born later than 1935 in Minnesota, you will be able to purchase a certified birth certificate from any county in Minnesota.

You must know your social security number for the form.

You will need a current picture ID such as a driver’s license for identification purposes.

As of February 1, 2008, all applicants under the age of 16 must appear in person when applying for a passport.

All children under the age of 16 must have BOTH parents or child's legal guardian appear in person and must:

  1. Present evidence of child's U.S. citizenship and
  2. Present evidence that they are the parents or guardian and
  3. Show valid personal identificatin and
  4. Sign and take oath before an authorized passport acceptance agent.

If the second parent is not available to sign, the appearing parent must:

  1. Do the above and
  2. Present evidence of
  • Sole legal custody of the child or
  • Notorized written consent of the other parent for the issuance of the passport or
  • Written statement explaining why non-applying parent's consent cannot be obtained.

Parents who are applying for a passport for their child who is 15 years old and younger MUST have the same surname on their drivers license or state ID card as the child. If it is not the same, then the parent must bring in a certified copy of the document showing the name change.

Passports are taking 6-8 weeks: expedited service is taking 2-3 weeks.

New Passport Card

Customers will now have the option to apply for a Passport Book, a Passport Card, or Both.  The Passport Card will provide a less expensive, smaller, and more convenient alternative for those who travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

The Department of State is issuing this passport card in response to the needs of border resident communities for a less expensive alternative to the traditional Passport Book.

The Passport Card is not for travel by air.  Valid for land and sea crossing only.  For additional passport information see:  http://travel.state.gov/passport

Fees

16 years or older:  One check written to Wright County Aud/Treas. in the amount of $25.00 ($35.00 with photo taken) and one check for $75.00 to the U.S. Passport Office or cash totaling $100.00 ($110.00 with photo taken).

15 years or younger:  One check written to Wright County Aud/Treas. in the amount of $25.00 ($35.00 with photo taken) and one check for $60.00 to the U.S. Passport Office or cash totaling $85.00 ($95.00 with photo taken).

Expedited Passport

Receive within two (2) weeks.

16 years or older:  One check written to Wright County Aud./Treas. in the amount of $25.00 ($35.00 with photo taken) and one check written to the U.S. Passport Office for $149.85 or cash totaling $174.85 ($184.85 with photo taken).

15 years or younger:  One check written to Wright County Aud/Treas. in the amount of $25.00 ($35.00 with photo taken) and one check written to the U.S. Passport Office for $134.85 or cash totaling $159.85 ($169.85 with photo taken).

You will need one stamp for $16.50 which you can purchase at the Post Office.
